Everything about Mighty Taco totally explained
Mighty Taco is a
Mexican-style
fast-food restaurant chain in the
Buffalo, New York area. All Mighty Taco restaurants are owned and operated by Mighty Taco Inc., a privately owned corporation.
The first Mighty Taco opened at 1247 Hertel Avenue in
Buffalo, NY on August 31, 1973. There were four original owners: Dan Scepkowski, Andy Gerovac, Ken Koczur and Bruce Robertson. Dan Scepkowski and Andy Gerovac are the current owners of the company having bought out the other two founders on March 1, 1974. Today, Mighty Taco Inc. operates 15 restaurants in the Buffalo area. For a brief period of time they were one of the original tenants of the Carousel Center's food court in Syracuse, New York. This first franchise outside the Buffalo market only lasted 3 years before shutting down operations.
Mighty Taco donates cash or merchandise to a variety of local causes, including fund-raising events for schools, churches, charities, non-profit organizations and private individuals in need. Every year, a large donation is made to the
Leukemia Society and the
Alzheimers Association. Mighty Taco has also been actively involved in the support of local music of the Buffalo area and the
University at Buffalo sports program; fans of the men's basketball team, the UB Bulls, are referred to as
Mighty Maniacs.
As of July 2006, Mighty Taco has made significant changes to their slogan, food wrappers, bags, beef, cheeses, refried beans, and tortilla chips. The fall of 2007 has also brought more changes in some of the brands Mighty Taco used to carry. It no longer serves Aunt Rosie’s Loganberry or brand name bottled water. The nacho cheese has also been changed from brand name Ortega to a generic brand
Products
The taco beef, beans,
hot sauce, mild sauce and
Chipotle chili recipes are signature products of Mighty Taco. Their trademark
Roastito consists of chicken breast or steak in a large or small tortilla with roasted peppers & onions and sharp cheddar cheese. Mighty Taco's menu also consists of a selection of
tacos,
burritos,
fajitas, and
nachos. For
vegetarians, Mighty Taco provides vegetarian and bean tacos. Mighty Taco also has the famous "El Nino Burrito" which features a 1/2 pound of ground beef.
Advertising
Mighty Taco is known for having unusual, somewhat
surreal TV advertisements, created by
Paragon Advertising
. Their television commercials have won several awards. (Notably, these "commercials" are also designed to be permissible on "commercial-free"
public television stations, and
WNED-TV airs the "advertisements" when promoting Mighty Taco as a supporter.) Their radio advertisements also are of note, usually
parodies of popular culture, such as prescription commercials, with a
non sequitur at the end of the commercial directing listeners to Mighty Taco.
The company also owns trademarks on
Super Mighty,
Mighty Taco,
Salsa Lito - Burrito,
Burrito De-Lite and
Roastitos.
Tray liners may also be highly unusual. In 2001, a tray liner featured a blueprint for the
Frank Lloyd Wright Mighty Taco restaurant.
